Toronto was in the sport spotlight recently as it hosted the Pan Am Games earlier this month. With 41 nations participating, it’s the third largest international multi-sport Games (bigger than the Winter Olympics!) and is held every 4 years. Although much attention was focused on the infamous HOV lanes, the magnitude of this 16-day event made for an abundance of contest opportunities!
Although not a personal “win” for me, it’s worth mentioning that my mom was selected via random draw to be a torchbearer in her hometown of Niagara Falls. Not only that, she had the of chance of carrying the flame at Journey Behind the Falls. Surrounded by local police, she also had her paparazzi moment with tourists.
To cap it off, she was even shown at the beginning of the Opening Ceremonies!
At the start of the Pan Am Games, I won a Toronto Sun prize pack which included various memorabilia, a Fit Bit and tickets to several events.
Checking out Team Canada face the Dominican Republic at baseball!
Gymnastics! It was non-stop action as the gymnasts rotated between various events.
The calm before the storm at beach volleyball.
Checking out the sights and sounds of the Games.
Another evening of beach volleyball.
I still don’t know the rules of karate but I feel like Canada got gypped out of a gold medal!
Finally, I was able to receive tickets to the Closing Ceremonies! It was an incredibly unique experience.
Here’s hoping the Olympics come to Toronto in 2024!
