Sure, everyone knows what a marathon is….but have you ever heard of the Marathon of Sport? This is a unique event which is organized by Motionball; an organization which raises awareness and funds for the Special Olympics.
Special Olympians join every team, of approximately 10 members, with each group in the Toronto event raising a minimum of $3,000.
Over the course of the day we played benchball (similar to dodgeball), soccer, flag football, ultimate frisbee and basketball with 2 games per sport.
It wasn’t all hard work though! Participants were treated to a full lunch and could also visit massage stations or the candy bar!
We even met Leafs goalie Ben Scrivens!
Regardless of any intellectual or physical disability I believe that sport has the opportunity to positively impact people of every age, gender or cultural background.
It was a privilege to compete with our Special Olympians Cody and Steven during this fantastic day! Our entire team left feeling inspired!
As the Special Olympian motto states:
“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let be brave in the attempt.”
*This event raised $200,000 for Motionball! There are still upcoming Marathon of Sport events in other Canadian cities including Calgary, Halifax, Kelowna, Montreal and Ottawa. To find out more about Motionball click here! *
